Background: The global epidemic of overweight/obesity – termed “globesity” is a major public health problem where rates of obesity have tripled in developing countries over the last 20 years. Factors like studying in private schools, consumption of unhealthy diet, insufficient physical activity and shortened night-time sleep duration are shown to be related with overweight and obesity. Hence, this study aims to assess the prevalence of overweight/obesity and the relationship of BMI with the socio-demographic and lifestyle factors.Methods: A school based descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 participants chosen randomly from grade 11 and 12. Measurements of height and weight were taken to calculate BMI and primary data about determinants of obesity was collected through semi structured questionnaire. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS 16v.Results: Prevalence of overweight and obesity was 4.25% and 2.25% respectively. Consumption of fast food and sugary drinks was found among 99% and 95% of the respondents respectively. Higher screening time for TV/Computer, shortened sleep duration and reduced physical activity led to higher prevalence of overweight/obesity. Factors like type of school [esp. private school, (p=0.019, 95% CI)], type of family (p=0.039, 95% CI), occupation of mother (p=0.019, 95% CI) were statistically significant with BMI.Conclusions: Apart from under-nutrition problem, there exists increasing trend of over-nutrition among higher secondary students in Tulsipur Municipality, Nepal. The shift of under-nutrition problem to over-nutrition says we need to rethink about the consequences of over-nutrition.

Background: Obesity is one of today’s most neglected public health problems. Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health problems. Obesity causes cluster of non-communicable diseases and creating an enormous socioeconomic and public health burden. Methods: School based cross-sectional study was done in Udaipur city of Rajasthan. Simple random sampling method was used to obtain 1000 study subjects. Questionnaire included their general information, factor contributing to overweight and obesity. Results: 500 (50.00%) subjects were from the government schools and 500 (50.00%) from private schools. Among study participants 336 (33.60%), 332 (33.20%) and 332 (33.20%) were from 8th, 9th and 10th class respectively. 8.20% Overweight and 2.40% obesity found among school children. Overweight and obesity was found high in private schools 14.00% as compared to government schools 7.20%. The prevalence of overweight and obesity is slightly more in girls 12.60% than boys 8.60%. Conclusions: Prevalence of overweight and obesity is more than 10% in school children of Udaipur city, The prevalence of overweight and obesity was high among girls, among school children’s whose mother were working.

Background: Cardiovascular endurance tests are considered as one of the best methods for assessment of the individual's health. Reduced aerobic fitness is seen in overweight and obese. Aerobic fitness is also reduced in centrally obese individual. However, very less scientific documentation available on the effect of visceral fat on aerobic fitness in Indian adolescents. Aims and Objectives: The present study was undertaken to check the effect of visceral fat on aerobic fitness in Indian adolescents of 18-19 years of age group. Materials and Methods: Our study was conducted on 120 healthy, non-athletes' Indian adolescents (60 males and 60 females) of 18-19 years of age group after their voluntary written consent. Visceral fat was recorded by bioelectrical impedance technique using Omron HBF-302 body fat analyzer. All volunteers were categorized into two groups on the basis of their visceral fat. Volunteers with visceral fat 0-9 were categorized as a normal visceral fat group, and volunteers with visceral fat ≥10 were categorized as a high visceral fat group. Estimation of VO 2 max was done by treadmill exercise test following the standard Bruce protocol. Results: In high visceral fat Indian adolescents, VO 2 max by treadmill exercise test was significantly less as compared to the normal visceral fat group. In normal visceral fat male adolescents (n = 30), VO 2 max was 49.29 ± 7.81 ml/kg/min, and in high visceral fat male adolescents (n = 30), VO 2 max was 33.94 ± 6.75 ml/kg/min. (P < 0.001). Similarly, in normal visceral fat female Indian adolescents, VO 2 max was 47.85 ± 7.10 ml/kg/min, whereas in high visceral fat female adolescents (n = 30), VO 2 max was 29.68 ± 7.79 ml/kg/min. (P < 0.001). Conclusion: VO 2 max was significantly less in high visceral fat adolescents compared to normal visceral fat adolescents. Increased visceral fat is associated with reduced aerobic fitness in Indian adolescents.
