Prevalence of osteonecrosis and associated risk factors in children before allogeneic BMT

Abstract: Osteonecrosis (ON) is a debilitating long-term complication of allogenic bone marrow transplantation (alloBMT) but may begin before alloBMT in some children because of their primary disease treatment. Therefore, to estimate the prevalence and associated risk factors for ON before alloBMT, we conducted a retrospective analysis of magnetic resonance (MR) studies of 118 children who underwent first alloBMT at our institution between December 2000 and September 2007. Of the 118 consecutive patients, 107 (90.7%) un… Show more

“…Several risk factors for ON were already described in previous studies 1, 5, 6, 8–11. In our cohort, we found that 94% of patients with sON were Caucasian and 88% treated with DXM as part of their protocol (59% DXM‐treated in the entire ALL cohort).…”

“…In patients who have undergone allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, the reported incidence of osteonecrosis of any joint ranges from 3.9% to 44.2% [21][22][23][24]. Recently, nearly 22% of prospectively monitored pediatric patients, irrespective of clinical symptoms, were found to have MR-documented osteonecrosis of the hips or knees.…”
