Prevalence of Oral Clefts among Live Births in Gansu Province, China

Abstract: Background: Oral clefts (OCs) are common human birth defects. Children with OCs in underdeveloped regions are more likely to suffer from poverty and hardship in their future lives. Here, we attempted to estimate the prevalence of OCs among live births in Gansu Province in 2008 to understand the epidemiologic pattern of the disease. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2008 to December 2008 in Gansu Province. The live births delivered between January and December 2008 with OCs were invest… Show more

“…32 Research showed that the prevalence had a rising trend in recent years in Gansu province. 27 We speculate that the differences between these studies and our results may be due to the imbalance of public health resources and that these research sites are located in economically underdeveloped areas. 31 For spatial distributions of the prevalence, we observed spatial heterogeneity of prevalence of cleft lip and/or palate across the study period in Guangdong province.…”

“…26 Compared with some cities in our country, we found that the prevalence of cleft lip and/ or palate in Guangdong province was lower than that in Beijing (18.9/10 000) 9 and Gansu province (13.48/10 000). 27 The results of our present study revealed the epidemiological characteristics and spatio-temporal trends of cleft lip and/or palate in Guangdong, the most economically developed province in South China. The time trends in the prevalence of cleft lip and/or palate may reflect the changes in risk factors and pathogenesis related to the disease.…”

“…The epidemiology of CL/P varies by factors such as the population object of study, sample framework, even data collection, and analysis methodology (Wang et al, 2018). Statistical data published in scientific articles usually come from surveillance systems or studies for institutionalized populations; therefore, the prevalence reported has bias associated with data collection and process information.…”

“…VSD is the commonest congenital heart defect, with an incidence of approximately 3/1000 in Chinese neonates [ 37 ], and spontaneous closure occurs during childhood in most cases [ 38 ]. The prevalence rate of CL is around 1/1000 in China [ 39 ]. This common malformation is typically effectively repaired by plastic surgery.…”
