Prevalence of occult hepatitis B in a population from the Brazilian Amazon region

Abstract: In the present study, we evaluated the prevalence of occult hepatitis B (OBI) in a population from the Brazilian Amazon region, identify circulating genotypes, and mutations in the S gene. One hundred eighty-one patients with negative serology for HBsAg and anti-HBs and positive serology for anti-HBc participated in the study. Detection of viral DNA, genotyping by sequencing, and analysis of nucleotide sequences to detect possible mutations were performed. HBV DNA was detected in 14.36% of the patients. Genoty… Show more

“…A very similar prevalence was found by Mello and colleagues [54] in a survey on the phylogeography of HBV/F in Brazil, in which HBV/F2 was suggested as being the oldest HBV/F subgenotype, thus representing the original native HBV of Brazil [54]. HBV/F2 have been described in variable proportions across Brazil [16,39,55,56]. Here, HBV/F2 was mostly found in North and Northeast displaying high similarity with other Brazilian sequences and with sequences from Venezuela.…”

“…Recently, another study performed in Para found the genotypes A and F as the predominant ones in these populations. Genotype A was the most frequentwith 88.46%, and among the subgenotypes, AI represented 78.26%, followed by A2 21.74% and the prevalence of genotype F was 11.54% 33 .…”

“…A high prevalence of occult HBV infection was also observed in a study conducted in a Brazilian Amazonian population in which HBV DNA was found in 14.36% of the patients. 5 In the Maraj o Archipelago, occult HBV infection was also observed among illicit drug users, whose prevalence was 4.6%. 9 Occult HBV infection is a warning to health authorities, because these asymptomatic carriers contribute to the spread of the virus in the region.…”

“…3 Furthermore, a number of previous studies have shown that genotype A is the most frequent in most Brazilian populations, including the riverside and indigenous communities from northern Brazil. [4][5][6] HBV can be transmitted through parenteral, perinatal, and sexual routes. 1,2,7,8 A number of different behaviors represent risk factors associated with the different HBV transmission routes, and the most vulnerable groups are sex workers, healthcare professionals, hemodialysis and blood transfusion patients, men who have sex with men, and illicit drug users.…”
