Prevalence of obesity in rheumatoid arthritis and its association with disease activity and latex positivity in a sample of patients in Erbil

Abstract: Methods: One hundred twenty patients with rheumatoid arthritis who were regularly visiting Rizgary Teaching Hospital in Erbil were included in a cross-sectional study using specially designed mixed questionnaire. Body mass index and waist circumferences were measured, and their association with disease activity score 28 (DAS28) and clinical disease activity index (CDAI) were estimated. Furthermore, we evaluated their association with positive latex test. Results: There was increased frequency of obesity in rhe… Show more

“…It is important to mention that no significant associations were found between BMI and RF anti-CCP in RA patients in the current study. The findings of the study of Younis and Al-Bustany [20] is in agreement with the results of this study. However, two previous studies observed that obesity is significantly associated with increased likelihood for development of anti-CCP-negative RA [26,27], meanwhile Lu et al found that risks of anti-CCP-positive and anti-CCPnegative RA were increased in overweight and obese females, especially those with early disease [28].…”

“…In agreement to the findings of this study, Levitsky et al reported that obesity was the strongest independent factor for prediction of non-remission among the RA patients despite the initiation of treat-to-target approach [23]. Also, study of Younis and Al-Bustany showed a positive association between obesity and disease activity since patients with higher BMI had higher DAS28 and also higher clinical disease activity index [20]. These findings are also consistent with those of Vidal et al [9] who reported that the DAS28 appeared to be higher in obese than in normal-weight RA patients.…”

“…This finding underlines the role that obesity plays in inflammation, autoimmune conditions, and metabolic disease 13 . On the other hand, obesity is common among RA patients, which is associated with higher disease activity 14 . Being female increased the risk of obesity, as we found in our results.…”

“…The amount of pro-inflammatory peptide is also lowered in association with decreasing adiposity. Also, a rise in the concentration of anti-inflammatory molecules and, by extension, obesity is now thought to be proinflammatory states (12) . The pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases is thought to include adipokines, and recent research has shed light on their critical function as mediators of inflammation and the immune response (13) .…”
