Prevalence of Multiple Sclerosis in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Abstract: Dubai should be considered as one of the regions with medium to high risk for MS, with prevalence rate higher than what has been previously believed. This high MS incidence and prevalence in Dubai is surprising and it may represent a true increase. Central MS registry and long-term follow-up epidemiological studies are recommended.

“…A very close numbers were reported in a study conducted in Dubai, UAE where 72% of the native subjects included in the study presented with weakness. [10] In another study that was done in Jordan, with a sample size of 224 subjects, 30.8 % presented with weakness as the most frequent finding. This shows that weakness is more prevalent as a manifestation of MS in the region.…”

“…Historically, the Kurtzke classification has designated many Middle Eastern countries as being low-risk zones for MS, but recent studies have shown that the crude incidence of MS in this region ranges from 31-85 per 100,000 individuals, and that the annual incidence is increasing [1][2][3][4]. Interferon-beta is generally regarded as the first-line treatment for MS, with natalizumab and fingolimod used as second-line agents in the case of treatment failure with interferon-beta [1].…”
