Prevalence of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Community-Dwelling Chinese Populations Aged over 55 years: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

Abstract: Background: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate phase between normal cognitive ageing and overt dementia, with amnesic MCI (aMCI) being the dominant subtype. This study aims to synthesise the prevalence results of MCI and aMCI in community-dwelling populations in China through a meta-analysis and systematic review. Methods: The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. English and Chinese studies published before 1 March 2020 were sea… Show more

“…There exist huge differences between rural and urban. Rural residents in mainland China usually have lower income, live in poorer housing conditions, receive less education, and enjoy lower levels of social and health entitlements compared with the urban ones [40]. Also, for elderly, mild cognition impairment is easy to be overlooked and it is di cult to distinguish cognitive impairment form normal cognition decline with aging.…”

“…Therefore, the possible link of causality or pathophysiological pathways between HSV-1 seropositivity and memory impairment remains unclear (Vanyukov et al, 2018). Besides, the majority of the global adult population (i.e., > 60%) is seropositive for HSV-1 (Looker et al, 2015;Harfouche et al, 2019;Khadr et al, 2019), whereas only relatively few develop memory impairment (i.e., 10-20% of adults over 50 years) (Overton et al, 2019;Pais et al, 2020;Lu et al, 2021). This suggests that HSV-1 seropositivity may only play a subtle role in the development of memory impairment in certain cases.…”

“…A recent meta-analysis and review found a high prevalence of MCI using the American Psychiatric Association's diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV) among community-dwelling older adult populations in China, averaging 12.2% in elders over 55 years of age with the amnesic subtype of MCI comprising 66.5% of the cases. 16 By contrast, systematic analysis has found that the prevalence of depression in the elderly was 34.4% in India, 17 and that loneliness affects 61% of the older population worldwide. 18 There are a few studies on the elder population in Pakistan that have included residential status, but these studies did not explore the factor of quality of life in people with MCI.…”
