Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in rheumatoid arthritis patients from Northeastern Brazil: Association with disease activity

Abstract: RA in patients from Northeastern Brazil was found to be associated with increased WC, high prevalence of MetS (one of the highest in the world) and disease activity. Patients with MetS displayed a higher frequency of cardiovascular risk factors, indicating the need for better control of disease activity and modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD).

“…This is supported by a recent meta-analysis on MetS in RA patients which revealed increased WC to be the most frequent component of the syndrome, matching the results of several others [33][34][35]. These findings point to the [30]. The finding of BMI-defined obesity in 26.9% of our patients is compatible with the literature.…”

“…Most of our patients were overweight or obese women with long-standing RA and moderate disease activity, indicating a relatively serious condition with high risk of cardiovascular disease. Relevantly, in a recent study based on a cohort of 338 RA patients, MetS was highly prevalent (51.3%, one of the highest prevalences reported in the literature) and associated with disease activity [30].…”

“…The country of publication differed between the included studies. There were six studies conducted among RA patients in North America (the USA) [ 16 , 19 , 33 , 34 , 37 , 40 ], two studies in Latin America (Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil) [ 12 , 14 ], two in Asia Pacific (Australia and Taiwan) [ 25 , 35 ] and six in Europe (France, Sweden and Netherlands) [ 11 , 15 , 17 , 36 , 38 , 39 ].…”

“…Additionally, the mean age of RA patients ranged between 49 [ 35 ] and 67 years [ 38 ]. Patients included in this systematic review had established RA (mean range of RA duration was 2.2±8.7 [ 36 ] and 14.4±12.4 [ 37 ] years). Although early RA (mean RA duration 3.3 months) was examined in one of studies [ 11 ], data were obtained during the follow-up period (5 years), which indicates that patients had established RA.…”
