Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its risk factors among rural adults in Nantong, China

Abstract: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) varies worldwide due to genetic and environmental factors. A population-based cross-sectional study, with 37,582 participants recruited in Nantong, China in 2007-2008 (stage I) and 2013 (stage II). Socio-demographic, lifestyle factors, disease history and fasting blood sample were collected. The prevalence of MS was much higher in 2013 (42.6%) than that in 2007-2008 (21.6%), which was significantly higher in older people in both stages. Participants with two or more fa… Show more

“…In China’s most recent national survey in 2009, a prevalence of 21.3% was reported [ 6 8 ]. It should be noticed that the prevalence of MetS in different areas of China was largely altered, ranging from 20 to 45% [ 9 11 ].…”

“…The prevalence of metabolic syndrome also increases with age, probably due to the age-related prevalence of abdominal obesity and insulin resistance 40,41 . Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance can predict the risk and incidence of CKD in non-diabetic elderly patients 11 .…”

“…Several studies found that people over the age of 70, which is similar to our participants, had MS incidence of 42.6%-70%, which is high above the incidence of our participants.
