Prevalence of menopausal symptoms in Asian midlife women: a systematic review

Abstract: Although there is a wide variation in the reported prevalence of menopausal symptoms, physical symptoms predominate, followed by psychological symptoms, vasomotor symptoms and sexual symptoms. Further studies of representative samples are necessary to understand whether the variations in prevalence reporting are a function of methodological issues or due to ethnic, cultural or other socioeconomic differences.

“…In the Study of Women Across the Nation (SWAN), after controlling for age, education, health, and economic strain, researchers found that US Caucasian women report more psychosomatic symptoms, African American and Hispanic women report more VMS, and Asian women report more somatic complaints (16,24). Notably, across countries and ethnic backgrounds, the percentage of women reporting hot flashes varies (25)(26)(27). In a cross-sectional study of premenopausal women (mean age, 48 y), one-third reported "ever" experiencing hot flashes (28).…”

“…Perimenopausal syndrome manifests in physical ailments, results in an unignorable deviation from healthy status, and makes women doubt their health status. According to a systematic literature review, perimenopausal symptoms among Asian women are primarily physical and somatic, such as muscle and joint pain or discomfort, lower back pain, waist soreness, headache, insomnia, sleeping disorders, heart discomfort, impaired memory, and reduced physical capacity (Islam, Gartoulla, Bell, Fradkin, & Davis, 2015). A Japanese study revealed that among the most common perimenopausal symptoms, fatigue was the second only to stiff shoulders (Ishizuka, Kudo, &Tango, 2008).…”
