Prevalence of major depressive disorders and a validation of the beck depression inventory among nigerian adolescents

Abstract: The prevalence of MDD in Nigerian adolescents is comparable to those found in western culture and the BDI is a valid instrument for screening for MDD among Nigerian adolescents. Health policies in developing countries must integrate adolescents' depression as a disorder of public health significance.

“…Our findings also suggest that the BDI, CRS, and CES-D depression rating scales may be useful as an adjunct tool to screen for major depression episodes as defined by DSM-IV criteria in adolescents. The mean BDI score was 8, similar to the results reported by other studies 11,23 . The mean CES-D score was 12, slightly lower than those observed by other investigators (ranging from 15.5 in boys to 18.1 in girls for CES-D) 24,25 .…”

“…Thus, according to our results, one-third of the sample would be at risk for a depressive syndrome or, at least, mild symptoms of depression. Although a similar prevalence of depressive symptoms has been detected in other investigations 25,28,34,35 , our results differ significantly from previous reports in the literature regarding the diagnosis of major depression in the adolescent population (ranging from 0.4% to 8.3%) 23,36 . A possible explanation for the increased depression rates in our sample could be the fact that the rating scales were more likely to estimate general psychiatric symptoms rather than depression itself.…”

“…This calculation yielded the total number of cases meeting the definition given in the ICD-10 classification of mental and behavioural disorders ( Table 1). [25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32] Treatment coverage targets Target treatment coverage rates for each disorder were determined on the basis of three factors: the severity of the disorder, the ability to detect cases in the population and the probability that identified cases will seek care. Based on these considerations and consistent with estimates from the literature, 6 we established the following conservative target coverage rates: 80% for schizophrenia, suicidal ideation, epilepsy, and dementia; 50% for use of opioids and other illicit drugs; 33% for depression; 25% for alcohol abuse; and 20% for paediatric mental disorders.…”

“…It uses a 4-point scale response format with higher scores indicating more severe depressive symptoms. Good psychometric properties have been reported for the BDI-II in screening for depression in Nigeria with a cutoff score of 18 and above, a sensitivity of 0.91, specificity of 0.97, positive predictive value of 0.88, and negative predictive value of 0.98 [7].…”
