“…A study around the same period as this study found H pylori positivity in 69% of patients with dyspepsia using the rapid urease test [13] . A previous study in the same setting found a rate of up to 73% and 85% among dyspeptic patients with and without HIV respectively [14] . Our high pickup rate of H pylori gives credence to histology as a sensitive method for diagnosing the bacterium, with the added advantage of enabling morphological assessment of the mucosa.…”

“…Previous reports (26)(27)28) seem to have underestimated the prevalence of H. pylori infection in HIV-positive patients. Marano et al (13) concluded that in HIV-infected patients with histologic chronic active gastritis, H. pylori is found at a much lower frequency than in HIV-negative patients, and they added that impaired acid secretion in AIDS may reduce the colonization of gastric mucosa by the bacteria.…”

“…Adults with HIV infection and/or a low CD4 count would then lose this mechanism by which H. pylori colonization is sustained, and infection intensity would diminish. Low CD4 counts are apparently associated with low-grade H. pylori infection (20,21,26,27).…”

“…We recommend investigation for gastroesophageal reflux disease and the use of proton-pump inhibitor therapy in all pediatric cases of CMV esophagitis. The role of esophageal candidiasis in facilitating the inflammation underlying CMV reactivation is not clear, although it has been reported in 10% of biopsied children, and up to 50% of adults with HIV esophagitis [49,50]. The single case of H. pylori in our patients with upper GIT disease would suggest that it is not an important comorbid pathogen.…”
