“…The median prevalence estimate of hepatitis B was higher in inpatient (26.7%) than in other (18.9%) study populations. Estimates of the prevalence of hepatitis C (median: 12.3%; range: 0.7%-25.4%) in persons with SMI were extracted from 14 studies 49,61,63,70,87,95,97-104 (18 measures). In the overall US adult population, the estimated prevalence of hepatitis B is 0.3% based on clinical data (NHANES 2005-2006).…”

“…Cross-sectionally 7.3-33.9 % are reported to suffer from any gastroenterological disorder (Beyer et al 2005 ;Thompson et al 2006 ;Oreski et al 2012 ;Fenn et al 2005 ), and the respected rate might be around 33 % for lifetime rates (Fenn et al 2005 ). Any liver disease is reported in 0.3-21 % (Kemp et al 2013 ;Perron et al 2009 ;Fenn et al 2005 ;Carney and Jones 2006 ;Fuller et al 2011 ;Laursen et al 2011 ), cirrhosis (mostly because of alcohol abuse) in 0.9-2.1 % (Perron et al 2009 ;Fuller et al 2011 ;Fenn et al 2005 ), gastritis in 0.3-15 % (Perron et al 2009 ;Fenn et al 2005 ;Kilbourne et al 2004 ) and peptic ulcer in 0.9-22 % (Goodwin et al 2009 ;Perron et al 2009 ;Subramaniam et al 2013 ;McIntyre et al 2006a ;Fenn et al 2005 ;Magalhaes et al 2012 ;Carney and Jones 2006 ;Laursen et al 2011 ). Other gastroenterological disorders are reported also like Crohn's disease (McIntyre et al 2006a ) and oesophageal varices (Fenn et al 2005 ), incontinence (Fenn et al 2005 ) and gastrointestinal fl uid and electrolyte disorders (Carney and Jones 2006 ).…”

“…Among the latter, antipsychotic drugs and, especially, second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) play a pivotal role [11,12]. Particularly, clozapine and olanzapine are associated with excessive weight gain (up to 2 kg per month) [13,14], but also the metabolism of glucose and lipids is affected to a varying degree [15,16]. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is a commonly known complication to obesity, may also be a possible side effect of antipsychotic drug treatment, and a high prevalence of NAFLD has been observed in schizophrenia patients [16].…”

“…Particularly, clozapine and olanzapine are associated with excessive weight gain (up to 2 kg per month) [13,14], but also the metabolism of glucose and lipids is affected to a varying degree [15,16]. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is a commonly known complication to obesity, may also be a possible side effect of antipsychotic drug treatment, and a high prevalence of NAFLD has been observed in schizophrenia patients [16]. Thus, in the present-day clinical setting optimal antipsychotic treatment is often compromised due to antipsychotic-induced weight gain and 'dysmetabolism'.…”
