Prevalence of Incidental Bochdalek's Hernia in a Large Adult Population

Abstract: Bochdalek's hernia is not rare, and the incidence of Bochdalek's hernias that contain enteric tract is higher than previously reported. This incidence likely represents a conservative estimate because some Bochdalek's hernias may have been overlooked or unreported.

“…Fourteen percent were bilateral, which corresponded to 0.02% of the total population in that study. 7 In adults the majority of Bochdalek hernias are found incidentally as they are usually small and asymptomatic. 2,6,[8][9][10][11] In the rare cases in which symptoms do occur, especially in adults, a triggering event is usually present, such as trauma, exercise, sexual intercourse, anxiety, or another factor associated with increased metabolic demand or thoracic and abdominal pressure, such as pregnancy, labor, large food ingestion, and even sneezing or coughing.…”

CHH may remain asymptomatic or induce only nonspecific gastrointestinal and/or thoracic symptoms [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The symptomatology of these patients is usually non-specific, in the form of repeated attacks of chest infection and/or recurrent vomiting, but can be associated with serious complications such as intra-thoracic gastric volvulus with incarceration and strangulation [1,5,6].…”
