Prevalence of hypothermia in the first hour of life of premature infants weighing ≤ 1500g

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the prevalence of hypothermia in the first hour of life of preterm infants with birth weight 1,500 g or less. Method: A cross-sectional study performed in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Data obtained from 359 computerized records of premature infants admitted between 2012 and 2016. Descriptive Statistics and Poisson Regression were used. Results: Premature infants (66.9%) presented hypothermia in the first hour of life, with axillary temperature of 36.2ºC (35.7-36.6), associated wit… Show more

“…National and international research studies indicate that postpartum hypothermia poses a risk to the vitality of PTNBs and that it is a predictive factor of morbidity and mortality, regardless of gestational age. Heat loss cannot be overcome by heat production, mainly in premature infants, and the team must carry out interventions for thermal control while caring for the PTNB ( 4 , 6 , 22 - 23 ) .…”

“…Investigaciones nacionales e internacionales indican que la hipotermia posparto representa un riesgo para la vitalidad del RNPT e, independientemente de la edad gestacional, es un factor predictivo de morbilidad y mortalidad. La pérdida de calor no puede ser superada por la producción de calor, especialmente en bebés prematuros, y el equipo debe realizar intervenciones para el control térmico durante el cuidado del RNPT (4,6,(22)(23) .…”

“…Hypothermia is considered as an independent risk factor for bad prognoses in newborns. The literature points to an association between hypothermia and increased mortality in premature newborns 27 . A national study showed a considerable number of 13/17 children (75%) who presented hypothermia after the insertion procedure for the Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter 28 .…”

“…Therefore, Nursing care aimed at preventing hypothermia is necessary 27 . This study listed data acquisition on the risk of negative thermoregulation, monitoring body temperature, and assessing the response to thermoregulation as measures to reduce the risk of hypothermia.…”
