Prevalence of Hyperuricemia and Gout in Mainland China from 2000 to 2014: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: We systematically identified the prevalence of hyperuricemia and gout in mainland China and provided informative data that can be used to create appropriate local public health policies. Relevant articles from 2000 to 2014 were identified by searching 5 electronic databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Chinese Wanfang, CNKI, and Chongqing VIP. All of the calculations were performed using the Stata 11.0 and SPSS 20.0 software. The eligible articles (n = 36; 3 in English and 33 in Chinese) included 44 studies (38 re… Show more

“…The prevalence is higher in developed countries perhaps as a consequence of diet, sedentary lifestyle and an increase in obesity and hypertension, reaching 21.4% among US adults (38). In China, due to rapid economic changes, the prevalence is increasing and a meta-analysis found a rate of 13.3% (39). We could not find a definite explanation for the controversial findings about the role of UA as a predictor of new-onset CKD between studies.…”

“…Significant increases in intimal areas, PCNA‐ and F4/80‐ positive cells in the carotid artery indicates that HU contributes to atherosclerosis, though no plague were found. Despite a few hundred systematic reviews, meta‐analyses, and Mendelian randomization studies exploring 136 unique health outcomes, convincing evidence of a clear causal role of urate in disease pathogenesis only exists for gout and nephrolithiasis . Urate is involved in a diverse array of biological functions, while possibly contributing to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular phenotypes, rendering it a pathogenic but not causal role .…”

“…In China, the prevalence of hyperuricemia is w13% (31), and the prevalence of tHcy concentrations $15 mmol/L is 27-30% (32,33), without the mandatory folic acid fortification of foods. In China, the estimated number of adults with hyperuricemia is 170 million, and the number of adults with tHcy concentrations $15 mmol/L is 350 million.…”
