Prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C among diabetes mellitus type 2 individuals

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) patients have higher risk to be infected with parenterally transmitted viruses, like hepatitis B or C virus. This study aims to determine HBV and HCV infection prevalence in DM2 patients from Northeast and Southeast Brazil. A total of 537 DM2 patients were included, 194 (36.12%) males and 343 (63.87%) females, with mean age of 57.13±11.49 years. HBV and HCV markers were determined using serological and molecular analysis, and risk factors were evaluated in a subgroup from Southea… Show more

“…They further showed that the viral load and antibody titers are positively correlated with blood glucose levels ( 241 ). Diabetic patients also have been shown to have an increased risk of infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) ( 242 ), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) ( 243 ), SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) ( 21 , 22 ), hepatitis C virus (HCV) ( 244 – 246 ), and West Nile virus encephalitis (WNVE) ( 247 ).…”

“…Based on previous reports, it is important to keep in mind, if on the one hand insulin resistance is recognized as a risk factor for the progression of HCV-related liver disease[ 26 - 29 , 31 , 32 ], on the other hand, preceding HCV infection significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus[ 7 ]. Additionally, diabetic patients are at an increased risk of acquiring HCV infection[ 64 - 66 ]. Thus, this two-way interface, i.e ., the relationship linking HCV and type 2 diabetes mellitus, is possibly determined by complex and multifaceted interactions among the hepatitis virus, the environment and the host.…”

“…However, there are studies reporting that diabetes is not associated with hepatitis. A study from Brazil reported that low prevalence of HBV and high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) among T2DM patients (Villar et al, 2019). Huang et al conducted a cross-sectional study about the association between HBV, HCV and T2DM prevalence among 9,932 participants in an endemic area for HBV and HCV infections in Taiwan.…”
