Prevalence of HCV-RNA-positive blood donors and correlation to ELISA and RIBA status

Abstract: In Germany, transmission of hepatitis C virus by blood transfusion is prevented by screening the donations for anti-HCV and ALT. The specificity of the anti-HCV screening in low seroprevalence populations has been questioned. In order to evaluate this screening policy we wanted to estimate the prevalence of viremic and potentially infectious donors by the HCV-RNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in our donor population of southern Germany. Donors (n = 301) were divided into four subgroups according to anti-HCV … Show more

“…Our data confirmed the rather low predictive value of positive second-generation EIAs previously reported by several investigators [7,9,10,19], Indeed, 27^10% of blood donor samples selected with Ab bott 2.0 EIA were found negative with Ortho, Sanofi and/or Murex 'third-generation EIAs. The conflicting results con cerned sera possessing weaker EIA ratio (< 3.0) in the sec ond-generation Abbott system.…”

“…The RT-PCR method was applied to improve the quality of HCV diagnosis especially in low-risk populations [9,16,23]. Our data indicate that the selected blood donors constitute a het erogeneous group in regard to HCV viremia: 31.9% of them had detectable amounts of viral RNA.…”

“…The prevalence of antibodies to the hepatitis C virus (HCV) worldwide is relatively high, ranging from 0.4% in Central Europe to over 10% in many countries in Africa [1,2]. HCV infection is mostly parentally acquired, and in the great majority of cases infection proceeds to chronicity.…”
