Prevalence of essential tremor

Abstract: Estimates of the prevalence of essential tremor (ET) are probably low because screening questionnaires have been used. The authors estimated the prevalence of ET in Mersin Province, Turkey, in 2,253 individuals aged >or=40 years, all of whom were examined by study neurologists. There were 89 ET cases (prevalence = 4.0%, 95% CI = 3.2 to 4.8%). The prevalence of ET may be higher than previously estimated. This is important when defining the extent of the health care problem.

“…It is commonly stated that 50% of ET cases are non-familial (Lambert and Waters, 1999;Louis and Ottman, 1996). Given a population prevalence for ET of 4.0% after age 39 years (Dogu et al, 2003), this suggests that approximately 2.0% of the population aged ≥ 40 years has a nonfamilial form of ET, yet the environmental correlates for this tremor are only just beginning to be explored.…”

“…Essential tremor (ET), characterized by action tremor of the hands, is a widespread late-life neurological disease that is present in 4.0% of individuals aged ≥ 40 years and 8.7% in individuals in their ninth decade (Benito-Leon et al, 2003;Dogu et al, 2003). As such, it is one of the most common neurological disorders (Louis et al, 1998b).…”

“…In particular, administration or manipulation of immunomodulatory cytokines have been proposed as alternative therapeutic strategies to modulate or inhibit proinflammatory cytokine production in IBD. Although, in the case of Crohn disease, novel strategies to inhibit TNF-α (e.g., administration of the anti-TNF-α monoclonal antibody, infliximab), IFN-γ, and IL-12 have been used in clinical trials (1,2), relatively few successful studies using anticytokine agents for the treatment of UC have been performed. Recently, type I IFN-α…”

“…The prevalence of ET has been reported to range from 4% in a population aged 40 years or younger (1) to 14% in people 65 years or older (2). While it is generally recognized that ET is inherited in an autosomal-dominant pattern with high penetrance, no human gene mutations causing ET have yet been identified.…”

“…Although postmortem studies pointed towards cerebellar changes, positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have revealed abnormalities in the cerebellum, thalamus, and triangle of Guillain-Mollaret, which is settled in the brain stem and inferior olive nucleus (3,4,5,6).…”
