Prevalence of Diabetes and Prediabetes according to Fasting Plasma Glucose and HbA1c

Abstract: BackgroundDue to the inconvenience of performing oral glucose tolerance tests and day to day variability in glucose level, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) has been recommended by the American Diabetes Association as a method to diagnose diabetes. In addition, the Korean Diabetes Association has also recommended the use of HbA1c as a diagnostic test for diabetes. In this study, we evaluated the prevalence of diabetes according to fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level only or the combination of FPG and HbA1c tests.Meth… Show more

“…Both approaches have their merits as, although diabetes is becoming more common, the increase in prevalence may be overestimated due to better case finding. 17 The findings of this study showing an increase in the proportion of patients meeting HbA1c targets are similar to findings from Australia, but contrast with those from the US, where no significant change occurred between 2007 and 2012. 23,24 The findings presented here indicating a decrease in diabetes-related amenable mortality are similar to those from the US, but contrast with those from Australia, where mortality rates remained unchanged between 1997 and 2012.…”

“…This is explained, in part, by improved disease detection with the recent addition of the HbA1c test to diagnose diabetes, and increasing prevalence of diabetesprevalence in England rose from 3.3% in 2004/2005 to 5.8% in 2011/2012. [17][18][19] There may also be an 'unhealthy survivor' effect, whereby people with diabetes no longer die prematurely but, instead, survive long enough to have additional admissions to hospital for diabetes complications.…”

“…Diabetes was diagnosed when fasting blood sugar was > 126 mg/dL or when the individual was currently using anti-diabetic medications. 16 Hypertension was defined as a systolic blood pressure of > 160 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure of > 90 mm Hg or the current use of systemic antihypertensive drugs.…”

“…Koreans aged 30 years or older had a prevalence of 10.5% of type 2 diabetes in 2010, and 19.3% of adults had prediabetes (impaired fasting glucose). The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in 2050 will be twice higher than that of 2010 [3]. …”
