Background: Jordan implemented a nationwide lockdown and recommended self-quarantine in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Such measures are expected to have consequences on mental health. Aims: In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of quarantine-related anxiety and its socioeconomic correlates. Methods: An online questionnaire was utilized to collect information about quarantine-related anxiety and related factors from a non-representative sample of Jordanian population in March 2020. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was used to ascertain the level of stress. Using STATA 16, multivariable ordinal logistic regression was done to estimate beta-coefficient (β) and corresponding 95% CI of the anxiety level. Results: Overall, 5274 participants returned the survey. The prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe anxiety was 21.5%, 10.9%, and 6%, respectively. Female gender (β= 0.47, 95% CI: 0.34 to 0.59) and more members of the household (β= 0.04, 95% CI: 0.00 to 0.07) were correlated with a higher degree of anxiety, while older age (β=-0.27, 95% CI:-0.33 to-0.20), having larger social network (β=-0.17, 95% CI-0.22 to-0.13), social support (β=-0.28, 95% CI:-0.32 to-0.23), and higher income (>2000 Jordanian Dinars vs reference, β=-0.52, 95% CI:-0.71 to-0.33) were correlated with lower BAI scores. Conclusion: Our findings showed that approximately four out of every ten participants experienced quarantine-related anxiety. Younger participants, women, and people with poor social support were more likely to experience quarantine-related anxiety. These findings highlight the importance of targeting these groups to mitigate the consequence of home quarantine on public health.

Objective: to verify, in the literature, a probable association of tinnitus with anxiety and depression in the elderly. Methods: a systematic review (through a search in the indexed databases - Lilacs, Scielo, Pubmed, Science Direct, The Cochrane Library) of studies published between 2013 and 2018, in Portuguese and in English, involving adults and/or elderly (18 years and older). The descriptors used were: “tinnitus", "depression", "anxiety", "adult", "elderly", interspersed by the Boolean operator AND. Results: 11 studies were selected, from which, 5 compared adults to elderly and only 2 evaluated such relationship in the elderly alone. Studies suggest that, as age increases, tinnitus severity and psychological symptoms also increase, affecting both men and women. Conclusion: few studies compared the relationship between the variables among the elderly. A probable association between the variables for both genders has been found, suggesting that the advancing age contributes to the increase of tinnitus severity and its psychological symptoms, affecting the quality of life of these individuals. Further studies are suggested to confirm the association between tinnitus, anxiety and depression in the elderly. Multi-professional work is important for the evaluation and treatment of these people.

Depression and Intolerance of Uncertainty: Association with Decisional Conflict in Otolaryngology Patients

Objective: To determine if anxiety, stress, depression, worry, and intolerance of uncertainty were related to pre-operative decisional conflict (DC), shared decision making (SDM), or demographic variables in adult otolaryngology surgical patients. Methods: Consecutive adult patients meeting criteria for otolaryngological surgery were recruited and completed DC and SDM scales, Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS-12), and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). Results: The cohort included 118 patients, 61 (51.7%) males and 57 (48.3%) females. Surgery was planned for a benign process in 90 (76.3%) and 46 (39.3%) had previous otolaryngologic surgery. SDM and DC scores did not significantly differ across gender, age, education level, previous otolaryngologic surgery or whether or not surgery was for malignancy. Patients with no malignancy had significantly higher DASS-21 Stress scores (mean 12.94 vs 8.15, P < .05) and total IUS-12 scores (mean 28.63 vs 25.56, P = .004). Women had lower PSWQ scores (41.56 vs 50.87 for men, P = .006). IUS-12 and PSWQ declined with age. DC scores correlated positively with DASS-21 Depression ( r = .256, P = .008) and IUS-12 scores ( r = .214, P = .024). SDM correlated negatively with DASS-21 Depression ( r = −.208, P = .030). Linear regression model for DC scores revealed a significant relationship with DASS depression ( B = 0.674, P = .048). Conclusion: Preoperative decisional conflict is associated with increased depression and intolerance of uncertainty in adults undergoing otolaryngologic surgery. Screening for and management of depression, anxiety, and related concerns may improve surgical outcomes in this group.
