Prevalence of clinically relevant oral mucositis in outpatients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy for solid tumors

Abstract: Although CRCIOM was a rare event in the investigated patient population, our results emphasize that pre-treatment dental therapy and primary preventive measures (including oral hygiene instructions) can be improved. Before starting chemotherapy, increased awareness of individual risk factors, such as male sex, tobacco smoking, low dental checkup frequency, poor oral hygiene, and a reduced oral health status, could help to prevent CRCIOM.

“…1 Studies on oral mucositis (OM). Incidence of OM was investigated in patients with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in 14 studies (32.6%) [3,5,14,17,19,28,31,36,37,39,44,56,62,67], in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients in 13 studies (30.2%) [18,21,29,40,50,51,55,59,60,61,63,70,73], in patients with chemotherapy in 13 studies (30.2%) [15,16,22,23,24,25,30,34,38,46,48,58,71], with mixed tumor types and treatment in 1 study (2.3%) [13] and with palliative care in 2 studies (4.7%) [32,57]. Cost related to OM in patients undergoing HSCT was the focus in 4 studies [7,14,17,54], in HNC patients in 2 studies [43,47], in patients with chemotherapy in 6 studies [9,10,11,12,42,49,68], and in patients with mixed tumor types and treatment in 2 studies [20,45].…”

“…In patients with chemotherapy for solid tumors, OM frequency for all grades is reported to be between 14.4% and 81.3% depending on the type of tumor and treatment, with a preponderance of mild OM (grade < 3), and a frequency of severe OM (grade ≥ 3) generally below 5% [15,16,24,30,34,38,58]. In a study on patients with advanced cancer, overall prevalence of OM was 22.3% [32].…”

“…Repetitive treatment cycles are associated with an increasing risk and severity of mucositis [58]. Even when clinical mucositis scores are low, even the modest degrees of mucositis still represent potentially important breakdowns in the host innate defense barriers [59]. …”

“…The reason is that salt water is not only a natural disinfectant but it also removes any swelling from the tissue. Giving a mouth wash to the patients with a medicinal property like those of turmeric or normal saline can prove very economical and beneficial for the patient in terms of cure and relieve from symptoms and also in regards to its use in the future and preventing complications [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28].…”
