Prevalence of Chronic Nasal Symptoms in West Sweden: Risk Factors and Relation to Self-Reported Allergic Rhinitis and Lower Respiratory Symptoms

Abstract: Background: There are few population-based studies on chronic nasal symptoms and little is known about their prevalence and determinants, or their association with allergic rhinitis and asthma. Methods: A questionnaire focused on respiratory symptoms and conditions was mailed in 2008 to 30,000 randomly selected subjects aged 16–75 years in West Sweden, 29,218 could be traced and 18,087 (62%) responded. “…Only one study performed in Mexico City has shown that allergic rhinitis was present in 3.6% of 333 elderly subjects who were attending a social security recreative center (12). In general epidemiologic studies, subgroup analysis reported rhinitis prevalence between 16.1% and 25.9% in the elderly (3,(18)(19)(20). However, different selection criteria and rhinitis definitions restrict interstudy comparisons.…”

The questionnaire has recently been validated against the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network questionnaire.…”

“…9 Similarly, the prevalence of allergic rhinitis is known to increase from childhood and adolescence to young adulthood, and thereafter it decreases by increasing age. 10,11 Both asthma and rhinitis are heterogeneous conditions and include both sensitized and nonsensitized phenotypes. [12][13][14] Allergic sensitization is important to consider because it affects both the persistence and the severity of allergic respiratory diseases.…”

“…Subjects were excluded for any past medical history of smoking, psychiatric illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, or recent medical use of glucocorticoids, catecholamines, and/or adrenergic antagonists. Their allergic history was determined by a positive or negative answer to the question [16]: ‘Has a physician ever told you that you have allergies?’…”
