Prevalence of Calf Mortality in Ethiopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background. Calf mortality has been a major cause of economic losses in the dairy industry in Ethiopia. The condition results in a significant drop in the number of replacing heifers and bulls for sustainable dairy business. Reports on calf mortality with a wide range of prevalence are rising in the country; however, a pooled prevalence of this condition has not been established. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantitatively estimate the pooled prevalence of calf mortality in Ethiopia.… Show more

“…Over the years, several studies have been conducted on calf morbidity and mortality and associated risk factors in Ethiopia. According to a systematic review and meta-analysis of calf morbidity and mortality studies in Ethiopia, the prevalence of calf mortality ranges between 0.9% and 37%, with a pooled prevalence of 14.79% [10], while the prevalence of calf morbidity falls within the range of 22.8 to 66.7% [11]. The reported pooled mortality prevalence is above the economically tolerable levels of 3%-5% that can be achieved with good calf management and is defined as the minimum standard for the western production system [5].…”
