Aims The study aimed to examine differences between paediatric nurses and physicians regarding burnout syndrome, secondary traumatic stress (STS) and perceived social support (PSS). Background Paediatric nurses and physicians encounter cumulative effects of treating sick and injured children and helping their families, in situations that might promote burnout and STS. Design Cross‐sectional design. Method Nurses (n = 158) and physicians (N = 76) completed self‐report questionnaires on STS, PSS and burnout. Results Nurses and physicians had similar rates of STS and burnout but showed significant differences in PSS. Furthermore, STS mediated the association between PSS and burnout for both groups; however, the effect was stronger for nurses in comparison to physicians. Conclusion Paediatric nurses and physicians would benefit from participating in interventions geared towards reducing STS, thus minimizing burnout. Moreover, advocating social support within the organization is needed to bolster the ability for coping with sources of stress. Impact statement Nurses' and physicians' involvement in the physical, physiological and mental needs of their paediatric patients might lead to burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS). However, research on social support in the context of burnout and STS among nurses and physicians is scant. Secondary traumatic stress and burnout were similar for nurses and physicians, though perceived social support (PSS) was higher for nurses. Secondary traumatic stress plays a mediating role in the association between PSS and burnout among nurses and physicians. However, the mediation effect was stronger for nurses. Policy makers would be wise to advocate institutional stress management interventions to reduce secondary traumatic and to reinforce organizational support for nurses and physicians.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate professional achievement and factors associated with occupational burnout among health professionals.METHODS:An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 436 healthcare providers, consisting of 101 nurses, 81 doctors and 254 nursing technicians, all meeting pre-established inclusion criteria. Occupational burnout was detected using the Maslach occupational burnout inventory tool. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires comprising questions concerning socio-demographics, education and training, and the Maslach occupational burnout inventory was used to identify levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and professional achievement.RESULTS:Emotional exhaustion was associated with education level and work place for nursing technicians. Depersonalization was associated with gender in nursing technicians. For nurses, depersonalization showed a significant association with education level, whereas this factor was associated with number of jobs for doctors. Lower levels of professional achievement were observed for unspecialized doctors compared to those with further training. Higher levels of professional achievement were associated with professionals with postgraduate training compared to those without.CONCLUSIONS:High levels of emotional exhaustion were found in professionals from the maternity unit as well as in professionals with lower educational levels. Depersonalization was higher in physicians with several jobs and in female nurses. Low professional achievement was found in unspecialized doctors, while high professional achievement was associated with postgraduate training.

Rev baiana enferm. 2018;32:e25070.Objetivo: verificar a presença de estresse ocupacional em enfermeiros da pediatria e analisar as manifestações físicas e psicológicas de estresse. Metodologia: estudo quantitativo, descritivo, transversal realizado com 22 enfermeiros de unidades de internação pediátrica de um hospital público situado no município do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Para a caracterização da amostra, utilizou-se um instrumento estruturado; na verificação de estresse, o Inventário Sintomas de Stress (ISS-Lipp). Resultados: a amostra foi composta, majoritariamente, pelo sexo feminino, com mais de um vínculo empregatício, trabalhando em regime de turnos e cumprindo carga horária acima de 40 horas semanais. Identificou-se a presença de estresse na amostra, sendo as fases de exaustão e resistência as mais prevalentes diante das manifestações psicológicas e físicas verificadas. Conclusão: a amostra apresentou alto nível de estresse cujo adoecimento já se faz presente, considerando-se as manifestações na fase de exaustão.
