Prevalence of avian influenza in humans and different bird species in Indonesia: A review

Abstract: Avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, is highly contagious and pandemic zoonosis of global importance, primarily affecting birds and other mammals, including humans. The present review is intended to highlight a report on the prevalence of avian influenza in humans and different bird species of Indonesia. The study is based on 27 scientific articles from 2004 to May 2021 in which the prevalence of avian influenza is determined mainly by the following molecular, virological, and serological tests: polymera… Show more

“…AI is a zoonotic disease mainly affecting birds and other mammals, including humans. The disease is still endemic in Indonesia ( Rehman et al, 2022a ; Rehman et al, 2022b ; Rehman et al, 2022c ; Pusch & Suarez, 2018 ; Wibawa et al, 2014 ). The widespread AI epidemic in domestic birds is a key risk factor as it increases the chances of mutations and genetic re-assortment ( Trampuz et al, 2004 ).…”

“…These factors were unsafe handling and farming systems and activities, including the rearing of different poultry species in a free-range environment in rural or urban locations, using contaminated vehicles and bird cages to transport live birds, and the insufficiency or absence of biosecurity practices at live bird markets. Given these observations, AI knowledge among poultry farmworkers and other poultry industry stakeholders is vital for AI prevention and control in poultry and humans ( Rehman et al, 2022a ; Rehman et al, 2022b ; Rehman et al, 2022c ).…”

“…Chukars in game farms are prone to various common bird illnesses, and coccidiosis is the most frequent infection (60). However, most birds fight with each other, causing fractures, lacerations, and infectious diseases (61), among other clinical cases (62,63). So, we need to sedate the bird to diagnose the disease, and if surgical intervention is needed, we can do general anesthesia (Table 1).…”

“…Additionally, other research on mice Iraqi Journal of Veterinary Sciences, Vol. 36, Supplement I, 2022 (229-234) Proceedings of the 7th (1st International) Scientific Conference, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Mosul 230 infected with influenza H5HPAI discovered significant mortality as a result of mouse interleukin (IL-6) and TNF deficiency (7,8). Due to the host's depressed immune system and the lack of host-virus interaction, the infection manifests very quickly, the rapid spread of the virus is caused by H5N1 HPAI infection in birds with low immunological response, as confirmed by Kuribayashi et al (9).…”
