Prevalence of autoantibodies in patients with endemic pemphigus foliaceus (fogo selvagem)

Abstract: The prevalence of the autoantibodies ANA, SMA, AMA, GPCA, LKM and ANCA in patients with EPF was similar to that observed in the control group. No association with clinical or laboratory manifestations of other concomitant autoimmune diseases was observed in EPF patients. These results confirm the concept that EPF is an organ-specific autoimmune disease.

“…The presence of these autoantibodies may precede the clinical presentation, and a high autoantibody titer is usually associated with inflammatory flare-ups. The pathogenic role of antidesmoglein 1 antibodies in pemphigus foliaceus has been demonstrated by the blister production in experimental animals after injection of pemphigus foliaceus IgG [5, 6]; on the other hand, there are few reports that provide the frequency of antinuclear antibodies in pemphigus, however its frequency and pathogenic role in PE are still unknown [7, 8]. …”

“…It should be noted that a false-positive result from IIF in our study was obtained from sera of two patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis. Table 4 demonstrates the sensitivity and specificity of IIF on different substrates including ME, guinea pig esophagus, and human tissues on different locations of the body for the diagnosis of pemphigus [2,7,9,14,15,20,24,27,[32][33][34]37]. For the sensitivity of IIF in the diagnosis of PV, HC was comparable to ME and guinea pig esophagus.…”

“…The existence of ATD among patients with autoimmune diseases such as vitiligo, chronic urticaria, and autoimmune rheumatic diseases has been well recognized [1417]. The simultaneous occurrence of different autoantibodies in different diseases does not seem to be coincidental but to result from similar immunopathogenic mechanisms involved in these disorders, which are still not completely understood [4, 18]. …”
