Abstract: To study the prevalence of atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma in Taiwan, we analysed the claims data of a nationally representative cohort of 997,729 enrolees from the National Health Insurance register from 2000 to 2007. Overall, 66,446 patients were diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, and 49.8% of them had concomitant allergic rhinitis and/or asthma. “…13 In this study females had slightly increased risk of allergic disorders while a study done in Taiwan found allergic disorders to be significantly more among females. 12 The risk of developing allergy was significantly associated with family history of the same in this study and several other studies. 2,[29][30][31] Studies have also observed that this increased risk seemed to be present no matter whichever type of allergic diseases were in family members indicating strong genetic component irrespective of varying prevalence and environmental risk factors of allergies in different societies.…”

“…The prevalence of an individual underlying disease is often age dependent; in Taiwan, the reported prevalence of bronchial asthma in a nationwide children cohort was 4·4% 32 , and the prevalences of diabetes mellitus and hypertension in nationwide adult cohort was 12·8% and 13%, respectively 33 , 34 . Our data suggest that children with bronchial asthma and adults with diabetes mellitus or hypertension are not at risk of the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus infection.…”
