Prevalence of asthma and its association with rhinitis in the elderly

Abstract: Asthma is common in the elderly and strongly associated with rhinitis. The OR for asthma is especially high in persistent and severe ARIA classification rhinitis types. This study strengthens the need for an integrated assessment of asthma together with rhinitis in the elderly.

“…These findings, supporting an extensive nose lung interaction, are well in agreement with many studies. [25][26][27][28] Moreover, asthma subjects with rhinitis reported considerably more respiratory symptoms. Our results are in line with the study of Erikson et al which found that asthma subjects with comorbid allergic rhinitis had a higher prevalence of symptoms common in asthma.…”

“…The age cutoff for the diagnosis of very late-onset asthma is not consistent but defined as > 50 years in some studies [75] and > 65 years in others [76]. The aging lung is associated with decreased lung function due to loss of elastic recoil and mechanical disadvantages.…”

“…This study showed that in aged people, asthma is a common disease and it has a strong association with rhinitis. According to ARIA classification, an especially high odds ratio for asthma is observed in persistent and severe types of allergic rhinitis [47]. …”

“…Frequently in old people asthma remains underdiagnosed (about 8% of diagnosis according to an epidemiological study in Portugal), and the percentage increases when respiratory symptoms are present [47]. Scarcely controlled asthma reduces the functional condition of older people, leads to a loss of independence, and to social withdrawal delaying the call for help and medical attention.…”
