Prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 according to socioeconomic and ethnic status in a nationwide Brazilian survey

Abstract: Objectives. To investigate socioeconomic and ethnic group inequalities in prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in the 27 federative units of Brazil. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, three household surveys were carried out on May 14-21, June 4-7, and June 21-24, 2020 in 133 Brazilian urban areas. “…A repeated cross-sectional survey observed increasing prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the Amazon (North) and North-east region of Brazil between May and June 2020 ( Hallal et al., 2020 ). The high seroprevalence observed by the present authors and others in areas of Brazil characterized by higher poverty rates is in agreement with the recent evidence that COVID-19 has disproportionately affected marginalized populations, in whom the human development index is lowest ( Horta et al., 2020 ). Buss et al.…”

“…The low prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies detected in this study (3.1%) is consistent with other reports ( 26 , 27 ). Our results also align with the 2.9% estimated prevalence reported from a serological study of the Portuguese population performed in July of 2020 ( 28 ), indicating that NOVA employees were not at a higher risk of contracting the disease.…”

“…Moreover, prevalence amongst the small group of indigenous children and adolescents was 7 to 10 times higher than that amongst white; Asian, Brown, and Black children were also more likely to present antibodies compared to white children. We had already reported on the high prevalence of antibodies in indigenous populations in our previous publications 18,27 , in which we show that this is mostly due to geographic reasons, as most of these indigenous children and adolescents live in the North Region, where the prevalence of infection was the highest in the country at the time of the study. To our knowledge, this is the first study reporting socioeconomic and ethnic differences in seroprevalence among children.…”

“…Although not considered a representative sample of the whole country, since rural areas and small towns were not included, the survey displayed a picture of the largest cities of the country located in all 27 States and the Federal District. Some of the results of these surveys have been already published 18,27 .…”
