Prevalence of Antibodies against Hepatitis C Virus in the Elderly: A Seroepidemiological Study in a Nursing Home and in an Open Population

Abstract: Background: The prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) increases in the general population with advancing age. Several discrepancies exist in the epidemiology of HCV, however, when selected elderly population groups are tested. Objective: To evaluate the HCV prevalence in two groups of elderly people living in the same geopgraphical area of northeast Italy, i.e., one including residents of a nursing home, the other including subjects living at home. Methods: The overall sample included 4… Show more

“…In Italy, the prevalence of HCV-positive carriers in the general population ranges from 3.2% in the north to 16.2% in southern Italy [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The highest prevalence of carriers is among the elderly, however, with estimated rates ranging from 4.1% to 33.1% [4][5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…The epidemiological factors included blood transfusions, [13] 2002 965 0-90 2. 6 12 but the main culprits were non-disposable syringes [14]; females were more infected than males [15]. Thus in Japan, China, and Italy, the prevalence of HCV antibodies steadily increased with age and people over 65 years old account for the majority of infected cases [16].…”

“…We read with great interest the article by Baldo et al [1] regarding the prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) in the elderly. The authors stated that one of the weaknesses in their study is that they did not investigate HCV viremia.…”
