Prevalence of Antibiotic-Resistant E. coli Strains in a Local Farm and Packing Facilities of Honeydew Melon in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico

Abstract: Pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli threaten public health due to their virulence factors and antibiotic resistance. Additionally, the virulence of this bacterium varies by region depending on environmental conditions, agricultural practices, and the use of antibiotics and disinfectants. However, there is limited research on the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in agriculture. Therefore, this research aimed to determine the antibiotic resistance of E. coli isolated from the Honeydew melon producti… Show more

“…Investigating the resistance levels phenotypically and genetically in relation to the persistent residues gives a better understanding about prolonged selection for AMR bacteria due to recirculation of residues. Extensive research has been conducted to resistance levels in the farm environment [41][42][43] but to our knowledge not in combination with antimicrobial residual concentrations. Peng et al (2016) measured the antimicrobial concentrations of amoxicillin, doxycycline and ciprofloxacin (a fluoroquinolone closely related to enrofloxacin) in manure during and after treatment of caged laying hens.…”
