Prevalence of anti-R-13 antibodies in humanTrypanosoma cruziinfection

Abstract: Infection with Trypanosoma cruzi develops in three phases: acute, indeterminate or asymptomatic, and chronic phase (with cardiac or digestive manifestations). Moreover, transmission may occur from infected mothers to newborn, the so-called congenital form. In the present study, humoral responses against T. cruzi total extract and against the 13 amino acid peptide named R-13 derived from the parasite ribosomal P protein, previously described as a possible marker of chronic Chagas heart disease, were determined … Show more

“…Chagas's chronic heart disease (cChHD) is a myocarditis characterized by arrhythmia, tachycardia and heart failure. In the chronic phase of the disease, patients present antibodies against the acidic rich C-terminal of Trypanosoma cruzi ribosomal P proteins [ 2 ]. It has been proposed that cChHD is an autoimmune disease produced by the existence of molecular mimicry between the C-terminal of ribosomal P proteins and the second extra cellular loop of the β1-adrenergic receptor ( H26R ) [ 3 ].…”

“…P013 (EDDDDDFGMGALF) and R13 (EEEDDDMGFGLFD) are the peptides corresponding to the last 13 amino acids of Trypanosoma cruzi P0 and P2β respectively and a major target of the humoral immune response against the parasite [ 2 ].…”
