Prevalence of abnormal urinary albumin excretion in elderly people: a Spanish survey

Abstract: A high prevalence of abnormal UAER in elderly people was detected in a randomly selected sample of Spanish general population. In most elderly patients, microalbuminuria was associated with high blood pressure and, less frequently, with diabetes mellitus.

“…The etiology of CKD in the elderly population is known to be different from that in the younger population. In a Spanish series, albuminuria in subjects older than 65 years was more frequently associated with diabetes and hypertension compared with the younger subjects [33], and improved insulin sensitivity due to moderate alcohol intake [27] may be associated with a beneficial effect on proteinuria risk in the old group. The inverse association of alcohol intake with eGFR decline or incident low eGFR was not different according to sex, but an inverse association of alcohol intake with eGFR decline was observed in the young group and a J-shape association was seen in the old group.…”

“…Recently, numerous population‐based studies had demonstrated that the elderly population showed a high prevalence of albuminuria. For example, the prevalence of albuminuria was 10.9% in a Spanish elderly population , 21.4% in a Chinese elderly population . In this study, the percent of participants with albuminuria was 23.6%, and the prevalence of albuminuia was higher in diabetes (28.1%) and hypertension group (29.0%).…”

“…It plays an important role in monitoring the progression of diabetic nephropathy and cardiovascular disease . Recently, many population‐based studies show a high prevalence of albuminuria in elderly population. So it is relevant to screen and monitor albuminuria in elderly population.…”

“…The reported prevalence rates of albuminuria in the general population have varied between ethnic groups, suggesting an association between albuminuria and genetic background and environmental factors [18,19,20,21,22]. Previous studies conducted in South Korea have included relatively small sample sizes.…”
