Prevalence, morphology, and molecular characteristics of Sarcocystis spp. in domestic goats (Capra hircus) from Kunming, China

Abstract: Despite the importance of worldwide goat production, little is known about the prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. in domestic goats (Capra hircus) in China. The aims of the present study were to determine prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. in domestic goats in Kunming, China, as well as to identify parasite species based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequence analysis. Only microscopic sarcocysts of Sarcocystis spp. were detected in 174 of 225 goats (77.3 %). By light and transmission electron microscopy, t… Show more

“…In fact, microscopic Sarcocystis spp. prevalence reached 91.6% in Brazil (Bittencourt et al., ), 79.4% in Egypt (Morsy et al., ), 97.4% in Iraq (Latif, Al‐Delemi, Mohammed, Al‐Bayati, & Al‐Amiry, ), 99.4% in Iran (Shekarforoush et al., ), 52.38% in Malaysia (Kutty et al., ) and 77.3% in China (Hu et al., ). Molecular analyses revealed slightly lower prevalence, varying from 50.7% to 90.48% in Brazil and Malaysia, respectively (Bittencourt et al., ; Kutty et al., ).…”

“…Sarcocystis capracanis was found in goats' meat samples from Brazil, Egypt and Malaysia (Bittencourt et al., ; Kutty et al., ; Morsy et al., ). In another study, both S. capracanis and S. hircicanis were identified in domestic goats from Kunming City (South‐western China) (Hu et al., ). The sequence described in our study was similar to S. capracanis , identified in Kunming City, and clearly distinguishable from S. hircicanis (94% identity).…”
