Prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension in Taiwan: results of Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (NAHSIT) 1993–1996

Abstract: adopted a clustered stratified multistage sampling scheme. A total of 4838 males and 4876 females aged 4 years and above were interviewed and examined corresponding to a response rate of 74%. Almost all of them (97.5%) had blood pressures measured. The results show that the mean blood pressure of adult males was higher than that of adult females below 45 years of age. After that, the pattern was reversed. When defined by JNC IV criteria (SBP/DBP у160/95 mm Hg or taking antihypertensive drugs), the prevalence w… Show more

“…17 The 1993-1996 hypertension survey conducted in Taiwan indicated that the prevalence of hypertension was 26.0% in men and 19.0% in women. 18 The agespecific prevalence of hypertension in our study was similar to that reported in the US population for those age 35 to 44 years and 45 to 54 years, but lower for those age Ն55 years ( Figure 2). Similar to our findings, several national surveys have suggested a high prevalence of hypertension in developing countries.…”

“…Without an effective intervention program, an epidemic of CVD and renal disease in China is inevitable in the near future. The prevalence of hypertension in China estimated in the present study exceeds that of many developing counties [17][18][19] and is similar to that in industrial counties. 20 -22 The overall prevalence of hypertension in Korea was estimated to be 19.8% in 1990.…”

“…15,16 A significant regional variation in the prevalence of hypertension and hyperuricaemia, with the highest in Mountainous area (mainly Aborigines) was reported in the first national survey, NHSIT. 16,17 Furthermore, we demonstrated that hyperuricaemia, diabetes and dyslipidaemia associated with prevalence of hypertension, specifically in Minnan women in this study. Body of evidence support hypertension a complex disease strongly associated with dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance.…”

“…12 To obtain discordant sib pairs for the study, the 30th percentile of age-and sexspecific blood pressure (BP) distribution in Taiwan was used as the cutoff to define low BP sibs of the hypertensive proband. 13 In some families, sibs found in the examination do not meet the criteria for hypertension or low BP were also recruited as control subjects for the family study. All participants with known diabetes or fasting plasma glucose higher than 7 mmol/l were excluded from the study.…”
