Prevalence and temporal pattern of hospital readmissions for patients with type I and type II diabetes

Abstract: ObjectiveRepeated hospitalisation for patients is common and costly, yet partly preventable. However, we know little about readmissions for patients with diabetes in China. The current study aims to assess the frequency and temporal pattern of and risk factors for all-cause readmission among hospitalised patients with diabetes in Tianjin, China.MethodThis retrospective, cohort analysis used the Tianjin Basic Medical Insurance Register System data of 2011. The patterns of and the reasons for all-cause readmissi… Show more

“…After the large financial input cut, China’s public hospitals were permitted to retain surplus from drug or services sales [ 30 , 31 ]. In China prescription drugs are predominantly distributed and sold in hospitals, which accounts for over 70% of all drugs sold and distributed [ 32 ], as well, the hospitals are allowed to mark-up drug price (usually 15% margin on drugs) [ 28 ] to gain profit for operating costs and retaining surplus. Hospitals pay bonuses to their chief executive officers (CEOs) as well as physicians using the retained surplus.…”

“…Investigation about the profile of and prevalence of search for healthcare services by individuals with diabetes showed a lower prevalence in patients with a longer period since the diagnosis, such as the elderly. 29 The aged with diabetes can present with better self-care due to the greater knowledge of the disease and treatment, owing to the diagnosis made years before, and explaining the protective factor found for search for emergency services. Better care of one’s health, especially by women, explains the association with chronic renal disease.…”

“…Studies that have used data from multiple visits of the same patients rather than only the most recent visit (Almagro et al, 2006;Daly, Douglas, Kelley, O'Toole, & Montenegro, 2005;Liu et al, 2015) have mostly not extended their analysis to measure predictive performance. The only study that we found that integrated information from many visits and also did predictive analytics did it specifically for Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) (Bardhan et al, 2014).…”
