Prevalence and Risk Factors of Clonorchiasis among the Populations Served by Primary Healthcare Posts along Five Major Rivers in South Korea

Abstract: Objectives:Clonorchiasis is an infectious disease caused by the Chinese liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and risk factors of clonorchiasis among the populations served by primary healthcare posts along five major rivers in South Korea. Methods:Forty primary healthcare posts that are located less than 5 km from one of the five rivers were selected from 26 counties. For the purpose of the survey, community health practitioners selected the nearest villages from the ri… Show more

“…In terms of gender, the positive rate in males was higher than that of females, and in terms of distribution among all age groups, the positive rate was higher in 50s and 60s. In the previous studies [19,24,25], males showed higher positive rate than females, showing the same results as this study. By age group, the results of previous studies which showed high positive rates in 40s and in 50s were considered to be similar to those of the 50s and 60s of this study.…”

“…All 14 participants who attend colleges and university were not infected by the worm in this study. In other studies, the associations between the infection rate of worm and education level have also been documented [19, 20, 23]. Similar result was found from in the Northeast of Thailand, where people who had graduated secondary school had lower risk (OR=0.38, 95% CI=0.16–0.91) of infection with O. viverrini (an helminth that has a similar life cycle to that of C. sinensis ), compared to the people who had only primary education [24].…”

“…In 2012, the total C. sinensis infection rate in Korea was 1.9% [ 1 ]. The population at high risk of C. sinensis infection comprises resident who live on the banks of rivers, such as the Nakdong River and Yeongsan River, in the southern part of Korea and who eat raw freshwater fish [ 1 , 7 , 8 ]. Although we surveyed for C. sinensis infection during a similar period, the infection rate we detected in Haman-gun (5.3%) was higher than that in the Gyeongnam area (4.2%) in the NSIP, but lower than that in the Nakdong River basin (13.8%) in 2013 [ 1 , 7 ].…”

Residents living on the banks of both rivers in Haman-gun had a high risk of exposure to C. sinensis infection because of the traditional practice of eating freshwater fish [ 7 , 8 ].…”
