Prevalence and risk factors for gastrointestinal parasitism in traditionally maintained goat flocks of South Gujarat

Abstract: A total of 360 faecal samples of goat belonging to Ahir community were collected randomly from eight villages on monthly basis. On same day, collected samples were subjected to qualitative faecal examination and positive samples were categorized into mild, moderate and heavy infected groups. The risk factors considered for study were age, pregnancy, lactation, seasons, wet land grazing and hygiene in housing. Overall 41.11 % animals were found positive for helminth eggs and among them 24.17, 10.56 and 6.39 % o… Show more

“…Parasitic diseases can affect any animal in the herd; however, they are more severe in young animals, especially lambs. In this study, sheep younger than 18 months tended to be more susceptible to strongyle infection compared to adults; although, these differences were not significant ( p > 0.05), similar to the studies of Dagnachew et al (2011) and Sorathiya et al (2017) . These authors related the lack of statistical findings to the lower number of young animals compared to adults.…”

“…Therefore, the development of ecological and integrated parasite management is needed to minimise the parasite population below the disease threshold level. For this, it is necessary to study all risk factors associated with parasite prevalence in a determinate geographic region ( Sorathiya et al, 2017 ). The amount of parasite eggs and oocysts shed in the hosts’ faeces is inversely proportional to the degree of resistance to parasitosis.…”

“…In current work, all the fecal samples collected from different hosts were examined by the microscope observation and most of them showed positive infection, but the species of parasites were much less than the record in other documents (Boomker et al, 2000;Booyse and Dehority, 2012;Hyuga and Matsumoto, 2016;Sorathiya et al, 2017;Chartier and Paraud, 2012). The reason maybe contributed to the Zoo garden has a short history with only twelve years and located in the forestry different from other zoos.…”

“…In general, the adult forms of amphistome parasites manifest diminished pathogenicity, but the immature rumen flukes during their course of migration lead to severe pathological disturbances including hemorrhagic inflammation in the wall of alimentary tract [ 2 ]. In India, several outbreaks of acute amphistomosis associated with high mortality among young sheep, goats, cattle, and buffaloes have been recorded [ 3 - 6 ]. In the absence of commercial vaccine, chemotherapy is the only way to deal with these rampant and neglected epidemic infections, but reports on emerging anthelmintic resistance have necessitated the quest to find new drug targets and promising vaccine candidates.…”
