Prevalence and risk factors for primary open-angle glaucoma in a rural northeast China population: a population-based survey in Bin County, Harbin

Abstract: POAG is a disease of serious consequence and of low diagnosis and treatment rates in rural northeast China. Age, family history of glaucoma, systemic hypertension, and IOP remain as significant independent risk factors for POAG.

“…This finding concurred with results found in most other studies of Chinese people that used the ISGEO criteria for defining glaucoma, except for the Bin County study, 3 which found the converse (1.6% vs 0.7%). In a pooled meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies of glaucoma performed in mainland China, 22 the prevalence of POAG was much lower than that of PACG (0.7% vs 1.4%).…”

“…These results indicate that a positive family history of glaucoma in patients with POAG reflects the influence of genetic variants predisposing to POAG. The present study supports the findings of previous reports [1][2][3][4][5][6] showing that a positive family history of glaucoma is a risk factor for POAG and suggests that genetic factors rather than familial factors may be considered to play important roles in the pathogenesis of POAG. Moreover, we investigated the associations between genetic variants predisposing to POAG and the number or degree of relatives with glaucoma.…”

“…Previously study showed sex hormone was not associated with glaucoma. [19,20] With respect to SG, including traumatic glaucoma and neovascular glaucoma, males were more prevalent than females (M/F 1.75:1). SG falls into 2 major categories: one is traumatic glaucoma related to male violence, the other is neovascular glaucoma which has a close relationship with chronic metabolic disorders, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.…”
