The present study aimed to investigate the longitudinal and reciprocal relationships among problematic smartphone use (PSU), depressive symptoms (DS), and suicidal ideation (SI) in Chinese university students. Using a cross-lagged design, the Mobile Phone Addiction Inventory Scale, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the Self-Rating Idea of Suicide Scale as research instruments, 194 university students completed a questionnaire four consecutive times. June of Year 1, December of Year 2, June of Year 2, and December of Year 3 of their college study. We refer to these as the Time 1 (T1), Time 2 (T2), Time 3 (T3), and Time 4 (T4) assessments, respectively. The levels of PSU and DS fluctuated significantly over time. DS at T1 was significantly predicted to influence SI at T2 ( β = 0.17, p < .05); DS at T3 was significantly predicted by PSU and by SI at T2 (respectively, β = 0.30, p < .05; β = 0.21, p < .05); DS at T2 significantly predicted PSU at T3 ( β = 0.14, p < .05); and DS at T3 significantly predicted SI at T4 ( β = 0.14, p < .05) in the cross-lagged pathway. DS at T3 fully mediated the relationship between PSU at T2 and SI at T4 (indirect effect: β = 0.133, 95% CI = [0.063, 0.213]). The results suggest that there is a reciprocal relationship between PSU and DS and, furthermore, that DS plays an important mediating role between PSU and SI. Our results suggest the importance of early identification and treatment of SI. Timely reduction of PSU and improvement of DS among university students may help prevent SI.

Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between extracurricular activities, stress, and suicidal ideation and to examine the mediating effect of stress between extracurricular activities and suicidal ideation in Chinese college students. Method: A total of 6446 college students were surveyed with a web-based online data collection system using the self-made demographic questionnaire, Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire—Revised (SBQ-R), and the 21-Item Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21). SPSS 24.0 was used for descriptive statistics and correlation analysis, and the bootstrap method in the process procedure for SPSS Version 3.4.1 was used to construct the mediating effect model. Results: Gender, school grades, living area, and family income status were influencing factors for suicidal ideation, stress, and extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities were negatively correlated with stress (r = −0.083, p < 0.001) and suicidal ideation (r = −0.039, p < 0.01). Extracurricular activities had no direct predictive effect on college students’ suicidal ideation (c = −0.198, CI: −0.418, 0.023), while stress had a mediating effect between extracurricular activities and suicidal ideation; the indirect mediating effect was 0.159. Conclusions: Extracurricular activities indirectly predict college students’ suicidal ideation through stress. A variety of extracurricular activities can decrease the stress and suicidal ideation of college students and benefit their mental health.

Background: Mental health issues impact people's quality of life worldwide, and educational pressure, sadness, and depression have caused unprecedented risks to mental health among medical college students. The present study aims at finding the factors responsible for mental stress and suicide among medical students. Methodology: A cross-sectional research approach was used to assess the effect of stress on mental health among students. A total of 60 completed questionnaries were collected from random students and were used for the analysis. The survey included 17 close-ended questions targeting demographics, potential stressors, coping mechanisms, and patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for screening, diagnosing, monitoring, and measuring depression, anxiety, and stress. The study's findings were analysed in Microsoft Excel, and descriptive statistics were calculated. Results: Frequency distribution showed that 22-23 year age group showed maximum stress (37.2%) amongst other age groups. The main factor responsible for anxiety and suicide in students includes academic pressure (40%), followed by relationship issues (8.3%). Around 45% of the population feel depressive for several days. Approximately 3.3% of the population has suicidal tendencies nearly every day and should be evaluated for suicide ideation by an expert and should be guided for counselling. Conclusion:The study exhibited 45% of the individuals to have at least one symptom of depression, anxiety, or stress. Overall, our results pointed out students' mental health problems and suggestions that may help build better mental health monitoring programs and treatment methods for the future.
