This 1-year follow-up study examined the predictive values of the demographics, depressive symptoms, stress-coping orientations, and perceived family support of caregivers as well as the internalizing, externalizing and ADHD symptoms of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at baseline on the depressive symptoms of the caregivers after 1 year. A total of four hundred caregivers of children with ADHD were recruited. The baseline levels of the caregivers’ depressive symptoms, stress-coping orientations, and perceived family support and the internalizing and externalizing problems of the children were assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced, Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, Resolve Index, and the Child Behavior Checklist For Ages 6–18, respectively. Their predictions for the caregiver’s depressive symptoms 1 year after the baseline were examined using linear regression analysis. In total, 382 caregivers of children with ADHD underwent the follow-up assessment 1 year from the baseline. A marital status of being separated or divorced, less effective coping and depressive symptoms orientation, and children with internalizing problems and ADHD symptoms at baseline were positively associated with the caregivers’ depressive symptoms at follow-up, whereas the caregivers’ perceived family support and an emotion-focused coping orientation at baseline were negatively associated with depressive symptoms at follow-up. Multiple characteristics of the caregivers and children with ADHD at baseline predicted the caregivers’ depressive symptoms 1 year later.

BackgroundIt is indicated that Oman is witnessing an increase in issues pertinent to alcohol and psychoactive substance use.AimThe aim of this study was to identify the characteristics of Omanis with substance use disorder attending a specialized hospital in Oman and the pattern of their utilization of healthcare services. A related aim was to ascertain the age group most vulnerable to alcohol and substance use in Oman.MethodA cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care center specialized for treatment of those engaging in substance use in Oman. The participants in the study were selected from a convenience sample among patients seeking consultation at the center for alcohol and substance use. A six-part questionnaire was designed to obtain information regarding socio-demographic background, clinical history, healthcare utilization and perceived hurdles to access. Chi-square analyses were used to evaluate the significance of differences among categorical data. Logistic regression modelling was used to obtain measures of association after adjusting for confounding factors.ResultsAmong the patients (n = 293) seeking cessation therapy, 99% were male and less than 30 years of age. Peer influences on the initiation of substance use were significant. Most patients had a history of polysubstance use, including intravenous substance use. Cannabis and alcohol were the first substances consumed by most patients and Hepatitis C and psychiatric disorders were found to be the most common co-morbidities. The participants that reported use of cannabis and benzodiazepines were more likely to perceive “improvement” upon receiving treatment.ConclusionThis study indicated that males below 30 years of age with a history of polysubstance use were likely to attend a hospital specialized in treating substance use disorder in Oman. This study identified information regarding socio-demographic background, risk factors and perceived hurdles to healthcare that could serve as groundwork for further studies conducted on newly emerging issues of substance use in Oman.

INTRODUCTION: The psychological burden, or the Burden of Care, of caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental disorders-especially attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD)has been the subject of many studies worldwide. From the Arab/Islamic countries there is a dearth of research on the burden of care. The present study attempts to rectify the omission by assessing the prevalence of the burden of care among caregivers of children with ADHD in Oman. OBJECTIVES: The study assesses the prevalence of burden of care among caregivers of children who had been diagnosed with ADHD seeking consultation at a tertiary care unit in Oman. Related aim is to explore the predictors of the burden of care, subtypes of ADHD and socio-demographic factors. METHODS: Across-sectional correlative study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Oman that provides child and adolescent mental health services. Arabic-version of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) was administered to 117 caregivers of drug-naive children with ADHD attending a tertiary care hospital in Oman with child and adolescent mental health services. Sociodemographic background and clinical data were gathered from medical records as well as directly from the attending caregivers. The ADHD symptoms were grouped as hyperactive, inattentive or mixed. RESULTS: The prevalence of the burden of care was estimated to be 34%. Binary regression analysis indicated that factors such as income levels of the caregiver as well as the child's ADHD being of "mixed" type have significant impact on the burden of care. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that the prevalence of the burden of care among the caregivers of ADHD children in Oman is comparable to that in the other regions of the world. Our results showed lower income sole caregiver and the type of ADHD to be significant predictors of burden of care. As the caregivers' psychological stress impact the wellbeing of the family, and the society as a whole, the issue of the burden of care needs to be studied further detail and interventions evolved.
