Prevalence and Need for Replacement of Amalgam and Composite Restorations in Dutch Adults

Abstract: In 1986, the first nationwide epidemiological survey of adult oral health and attitudes to oral health care was carried out in The Netherlands. One of the aims of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and the quality (in terms of need for replacement) of amalgam and composite restorations in the Dutch adult population. A group of 600 dentate individuals, 20-44 years of age, was examined. Stratified cluster sampling included as factors age, gender, socio-economic status, and area of residence. Two additiona… Show more

“…Flexural strength of the ceramic material is an important factor for the success of any fixed restorations [9]. Flexural strength test are preferred to diametral compressive test because they more closely simulate the stress distribution in the dental prostheses.…”

“…Gaps may occur at the interface between the restoration and the remaining tooth structure when the enamel or dentine bond strength is inadequate to withstand the polymerization contractile stresses. This phenomenon may cause post-operative pain, marginal microleakage and secondary caries, which are the predominant reason for replacement of composite resin restorations [8][9][10] . If the bond strength is adequate, the contraction stress is transmitted to the remaining tooth structure and may result in enamel microcracks and cuspal deflection 7 .…”

“…2,3 Staining or discoloration is one of the most common reasons for replacement of composite restorations 4 and most of the published reports document that the finish, surface roughness and surface integrity of the restoration, as well as the physicochemical properties of the material itself can influence plaque adhesion and retention and staining of the composite resin. 5,6 The dental practitioners' knowledge and attitudes toward the oral health care provide the frame work for their professional work. 7 Dentists' treatment decisions are influenced by their knowledge toward care options, and assessing these is worthwhile.…”
