Prevalence and molecular characterizations of enterovirus D68 among children with acute respiratory infection in China between 2012 and 2014

Abstract: EV-D68 is associated with respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Since its first isolation, EV-D68 has been detected sporadically. However, the US and Canada have experienced outbreaks of EV-D68 infections between August and December 2014. This study aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology and clinical characteristics of EV-D68 in Chongqing, Southwestern China. From January 2012 to November 2014, 1876 nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens (NPAs) were collected from hospitalized children with RTIs. Among the … Show more

“…In particular, EV-D68 outbreaks in the United States in 2014 have raised concerns of a pandemic789. Similarly, between 2006 and 2014 EV-D68 infections in China were also detected in children and adults with respiratory infections410111213. In contrast to the symptoms caused by EV-D68 and the prevalence observed in the United States, none of the cases in China had nervous system dysfunction and no notable outbreak was reported.…”

“…To understand the prevalence of EV-D68 in China, we analyzed 64 Chinese EV-D68 sequences including 54 sequences, which were previously identified410111213, two sequences submitted directly to Genbank, and eight sequences that were detected from children hospitalized in Beijing Children’s Hospital between 2007 and 2014. Our results revealed sequence differences in the 3′-UTR and puff region of VP2 as well as six coding polymorphisms that are associated with neurovirulence7.…”

“…Therefore, understanding the status of neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) against EV-D68 in population is important to assess the prevalence of previous infection and transmission potential of EV-D68. Unfortunately, only a few serological investigations have been conducted in a small part of China (including Beijing [21,22], Jiangsu [18], Chongqing [23] and Taiwan [24]), as well as in the United States [25], the United Kingdom [26] and the Netherlands [27], the pattern of immune responses have not been well studied for EV-D68. Xiamen is a major seaport and tourist city along the southeast coast of China with an increased oating population.…”

“…Además, la infección se asoció con linfocitopenia y propensión al desarrollo de hipoxemia 10 . Debido al incremento de los casos de EV-D68 en todo el mundo 3,[11][12][13][14][15] , se le considera como un patógeno reemergente 1 .…”
