Prevalence and management of hypercholesterolemia in France, the Esteban observational study

Abstract: Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, its management in everyday clinical practice is often suboptimal. The aims of the Esteban study were to estimate the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia and to describe its management in France in 2015. Esteban is a cross-sectional, publicly funded survey, representative of the French population. Data were collected using questionnaires and biological and clinical examinations in 3021 adults aged 18-74. The l… Show more

“…Table 2 shows that the population of young HF patients had more major HF risk factors (and often multiple factors) than anticipated in such a young population in France. [14][15][16][17] Indeed, the classical atherosclerotic risk factors (i.e. smoking, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, or obesity) were substantially high and significantly more frequent in patients with IHD than in patients with myocarditis-cardiomyopathy or others diagnosis.…”

“…Another study reported that overweight participants have a higher risk of suffering from HC. In addition, a publicly funded cross-sectional survey carried out on the French population found that the HC prevalence in France is 23.3%, while in Spain, a cross-sectional study conducted from June 2008 to October 2010 with 11554 representative individuals of the population aged ≥18 years found that 50.5% of the population suffer from HC [ 44 ]. In the elderly population of Cyprus, a study conducted found a positive association between smoking habits and HC, whereas an inverse connection was observed among HC, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and an alcohol drinking, after controlling for sex, age, and other factors [ 45 ].…”

“… 3 This increase is expected to continue, given the high proportion of the main cardiovascular risk factors (tobacco, cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, obesity) in the French population. 4–8 Finally, the decline in MI mortality over recent decades is contributing to increased MI prevalence in the population.…”
