Gasterophilus larvae are common obligate parasites of the digestive tract of the equids. Horses become infected with this parasite by ingesting the larvae hatched from eggs laid by the female flies. In this study carried out monthly, we (i) counted the Gasterophilus eggs deposited by female flies on the coat of 30 grazing horses, (ii) counted and identified the Gasterophilus larvae retrieved from the digestive tract of 128 slaughtered horses, and (iii) compared these results to meteorological data. Eggs were deposited on all monitored horses, and were present from October to January and from May to September, whereas they were absent from February to April. The number of laid eggs was significantly different between the months, body regions, genders, and age classes (p < 0.05). Larvae were recovered in 112 (87.5%) horses, and 6 species of Gasterophilus were identified. The prevailing species were Gasterophilus intestinalis (recovered in 110 horses; 85.9%) and Gasterophilus nasalis (69 horses; 53.9 %), recovered in all months. Gasterophilus inermis (5 horses; 3.9%), Gasterophilus pecorum (3 horses; 2.3%), Gasterophilus haemorrhoidalis (3 horses; 2.3%)¸ and Gasterophilus meridionalis (2 horses; 1.6%) larvae were also found. Significant differences were found among monthly larval burdens for both Gasterophilus spp. and G. intestinalis (p < 0.05), but not for G. nasalis (p > 0.05). Larval burdens and prevalences did not differed significantly between both genders and age classes (p > 0.05). Monthly eggs and larvae trends were not significantly correlated (p > 0.05). With regard to the meteorological variables, minimum air temperature was significantly correlated with the eggs trend (rho = 1.000; p < 0.001) and maximum air temperature with the Gasterophilus spp. (rho = 0.972; p < 0.001) and G. intestinalis (rho = 0.972; p < 0.001) larvae trends. In addition, the number of hours with a temperature below +10 °C was significantly correlated with G. intestinalis larvae trend (rho = 0.602; p < 0.05). Our findings confirmed that in Sardinia, Gasterophilosis is an important parasitosis in the horses, and it needs more attention and extensive and/or correct treatment to reduce its prevalence.

Ocurrencia de miasis cavitaria equina (Gasterophilus Spp) y su relación con las úlceras gástricas secundarias en la mucosa escamosa en AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the ocurrence of equine cavitary myiasis (Gasterophilus spp) in the CholChol slaughtering house in Temuco, Chile and its relation with the presentation of secondary gastric ulcers in the non-glandular squamous mucosa of the horses' (Equus caballus) stomachs. Of 240 stomachs evaluated post mortem, 145 were selected and characterized as positive to gasterophilosis (60.4%), of which 75 were males (20 stallions and 55 geldings) and 70 were mares, with ages ranging from 1 to 16 years. Every stomach was evaluated, characterized and photographed post mortem. Information about sex, age, location of the Gasterophilus larvae, presence and degree of ulceration of the squamous mucosa, were recorded in the respective forms and posteriorly digitalized. Global analysis of the location of larvae in the stomach of horses positive to gasterophilosis, established that 91.7% were located in the glandular mucosa, while 8.3% were located in the squamous mucosa. In the stomachs with presence of larvae in the antral/piloric regions of the glandular mucosa, 87.6% had secondary ulcers in the nonglandular squamous mucosa, due to the increase in the gastric fill line following alterations in gastric emptying, of which 69% were classified in categories 3 to 4 with a number of larvae higher tan 30, while 18.6% were found in categories 1 or 2 with less than 30 larvae per site. Regarding the location of larvae in the squamous mucosa, 8.3% of the stomachs showed primary mechanic ulcers, all classified between grades 1 and 2. Of all the animals evaluated, 62.1% had more tan 60 larvae, of which 60.1% had grade 3 or 4 secondary squamous ulcers, 15.9% had between 30 and 60 larvae per site, and 14.5% had less than 30 larvae per site. The study showed significant statistical dependence (p<0.05) between the number of larvae located in the glandular mucosa and the degree of severity of the secondary gastric ulcers in the squamous mucosa. Gasterophilus spp. (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) has a worldwide distribution; however, no complete mitochondrial (mt) genome data is available for Diptera which has greatly impeded population genetics, phylogenetics, and systematics studies in Gasterophilidae. Mt genome is known to provide genetic markers for investigations in these areas, but complete mt genomic datasets have been lacking for many Gasterophilidae species. Herein, we present the complete mt genome of the third-stage larvae (L3) of Gasterophilus intestinalis from the stomach wall of naturally infected horses in Heilongjiang province (HLJ) and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XJ), China. The complete mt genome of G. intestinalis was 15,687 bp (HLJ) and 15,660 bp (XJ) in length and consists of 37 genes, including 13 genes for proteins, 22 genes for tRNA, and 2 genes for rRNA. The gene arrangement is the same as those of Oestroidae species. Phylogenetic analyses using concatenated amino acid sequences of 12 protein-coding genes by Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML), suggested that the families Gasterophilidae and Oestroidae were more closely related than to Tachinidae. The mt genome of G. intestinalis represents the first mt genome of any member of the family Gasterophilidae. These data provide novel mtDNA markers for studying the molecular epidemiology and population genetics of the G. intestinalis and its congeners.
