“…A large population based study in Catalonia (north-eastern Spain) similarly found high prevalence (36.2 cases per 10,000) and incidence rates (4.81 cases per 10,000). In contrast to other global datasets, the prevalence and incidence of bronchiectasis in this study was highest in older males [48]. A larger multicentre study in Spain however showed contrasting results with higher prevalence in females and elevated rates of post-infectious disease [30].…”

“…In Spain up to 10% of the adult population has COPD10 and 1.5% of men older than 65 years have bronchiectasis;11 therefore, they may both coexist. Although the diagnosis of COPD is based on physiology and that of bronchiectasis on morphology, both diseases may result in similar lung function abnormalities and non-specific respiratory symptoms.…”

“…There is growing evidence that incidence and prevalence of bronchiectasis and associated hospitalisations are increasing. The highest bronchiectasis prevalence rates have been reported in the United Kingdom (2013: 566.1 per 100,000 inhabitants in men and 485.5 per 100,000 inhabitants in women) and Catalonia (2012: 362 per 100,000 inhabitants) 20,26 . In 2013, Ringshausen et al 27 based on International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD-10) diagnosis codes found a much lower prevalence in Germany of 67 per 100,000 inhabitants.…”
