Prevalence and Genotype Characterization of Blastocystis hominis Among the Baghmalek People in Southwestern Iran in 2013 - 2014

Abstract: Background:Blastocystis hominis is a common globally distributed parasite. The prevalence of this parasite has been shown to vary among different countries. Molecular studies have also shown that there is a high level of genetic diversity among Blastocystis spp. isolated from humans and animals. Extensive information on parasitic genotypes will aid in devising more effective strategies for the identification and potential control of these pathogenic parasites. Objectives:This study aimed to gain information on … Show more

“…15,28,37 On the contrary, no difference in the infection rates was documented between the genders by other studies. 19,30,38 Previous publications reported high prevalence rates among individuals aged 5-59, 30 in adults aged ≥ 18 years, 15 and those aged 18-30 years 31 . Li and others demonstrated that individuals aged 60 years and above had the highest rate of Blastocystis spp.…”

“…9 However, other studies found no significant relation between the infection prevalence and age. 38,39 These contradictory results can be explained by the local determinants such as the environmental conditions that affect the fecal-oral route of transmission among individuals of different ages and genders. 15 On the other hand, number of the participants aged 7-19 years was low (3.9%), which might also have affected the results of statistical analyses in the current study.…”

“…The forward (Blast 505-532: 5′-GGAGGTAGTGACAATAAATC-3′) and reverse (Blast 998-1017: 5′-TGCTTTCGCACTTGTTCATC -3′) primers were used for amplification of the SSU-rRNA gene. 22 The PCR reaction was performed in a final volume of 25 μl. Each reaction contained 12.5 μl of the PCR master mix (2x Master Mix RED (Ampliqon, Denmark), (1.25 U Taq DNA polymerase, 200 μM of dNTPs and 1.5 mM of MgCl2), 0.5 μl of each primer (12.5 pmol), 5 μl of template DNA and 6.5 μl of double-distilled water.…”

“…16 The molecular studies conducted for the genotype identification of Blastocystis isolated from humans in Iran have reported the ST1, ST2, ST3, ST4, ST5, ST6 and ST7 genotypes. [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27] The result of many studies https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cegh.2020.02.010 Received 11 September 2019; Received in revised form 2 January 2020; Accepted 14 February 2020 that were performed in Iran have showed that subtype 3 is the most common subtype of Blastocystis. 19,21,[23][24][25]27 Considering the fact that different subtypes of Blastocystis may be associated with geographical distribution, hosts and pathogenicity of parasite, 19,28 therefore, identification of the subtypes of Blastocystis is necessary for epidemiological studies.…”

“…In Iran, information about Blastocystis subtypes is restricted to a few studies (14)(15)(16)(17) and only one study has investigated the relationship between Blastocystis sp. and IBS (18).…”
