Prevalence and genetic evolution of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus in commercial fattening pig farms in China

Chao Li,
Jing Zhao,
Wansheng Li
et al.

Abstract: Background To investigate the prevalence and evolution of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) at commercial fattening pig farms, a total of 1397 clinical samples were collected from a single fattening cycle at seven pig farms in five provinces of China from 2020 to 2021. Results The RT‒PCR results revealed that PRRSV was present on all seven farms, and the percentage of PRRSV-positive individuals was 17.54–53.33%. A total of… Show more

“…Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a highly contagious disease that significantly threaten to the health of pig herds [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Generally, PRRSV consists of two basic species: Betaarterivirus suid 1 (PRRSV-1 or the European genotype), and Betaarterivirus suid 2 (PRRSV-2 or the North American genotype) [ 4 , 5 ]. The North American genotype has caused a worldwide pandemic, resulting in severe economic damage to the pig industry [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an economically devastating pathogen that is globally prevalent in most pig-raising countries and regions, such as China [1,2], the United States [3,4], Thailand, Vietnam, Denmark, and many other European countries [5][6][7]. PRRSV infection can cause clinical symptoms, including respiratory distress in pigs of all ages and extensive reproductive failure in sows, such as stillbirths, mummified fetuses, and abortions [8][9][10][11][12][13].…”
