Prevalence and factors associated with nonalcoholic fatty pancreas disease and its severity in China

Abstract: Pancreatic lipidosis (nonalcoholic fatty pancreas disease, NAFPD) causes insulin resistance and dysfunction of pancreatic β-cells, with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the prevalence and pathogenic factors associated with NAFPD are not clear. The aim of the study was to explore the prevalence of NAFPD in a Chinese adult population, and investigate factors associated with NAFPD aggravation. This was a cross-sectional study; 4419 subjects were enrolled for NAFPD screening and were divided in… Show more

“…There were 10 studies reporting on the proportion of DM individuals in the presence or absence of NAFPD. One thousand ninety five individuals had DM in 5550 individuals with NAFPD; 4097 individuals had DM in 43 863 individuals without NAFPD.…”

“…Nine studies provided data on the proportion of MetS subjects with hypertension, with or without NAFPD. One thousand, five hundred fifty eight individuals had hypertension in 5264 NAFPD‐positive population; 8758 individuals had hypertension in 43 721 NAFPD‐negative individuals.…”

“…Although there is increasing evidence describing the association of metabolic syndrome with NAFPD, unlike NAFLD, the effect of metabolic syndrome on the pancreas has not been well characterized. Per a Chinese study, type 2 DM, obesity, and the Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA‐IR) were shown to be independent risk factor for NAFPD . NAFPD, as compared with NAFLD, predominantly undergoes fat deposition via infiltration by adipocytes .…”
